Lyrics
It's been years now since I felt alive,
But I mask it with a smile to survive.
Why my people always get the back seat,
While others have it all within their reach.
We allow this system to be so suffocating,
While kids get a blank canvas, no control of what they're painting.
From systemic racism to brutal acts played out,
My hope done emptied like a well in a drought.
Institutions get funds to set us free,
But always find a way to not let us
"Breathe"
"Breathe "
"Breathe"
My cousin Eric Garner had his last breath taken
While crooked cops still count the money they making.
To protect and serve, yeah right they be faking,
ain't that been the case since slavery was in the making?.
How long we gonna sit back, give them excuses,
while we are suffocated - deal with our internal bruises.
It's time we put Freedom First, we all deserve to be free,
Get up, stand up for each other's rights as if we are all family.
It hit so close to home when my cousin got taken,
So close to home when I heard about my brother Keith LaMar's situation
So close to home seeing friends and family in jail,
Wondering Why they never had a chance to go to Harvard or Yale
So close to home when my childhood friend
Nicholas Heyward Jr. was killed by cops at the age of 13,
So close to home when when I realized this was my reality not a dream
Still can't believe how my cousin was taken,
But the truth be told I've seen so much it was the beginning of my awakening.
