Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky, born Nikolay Vasilyevich Korneychukov in Saint
Petersburg, Russian Empire, on 31 March 1882, was a Russian and Soviet
children's poet, writer, translator, literary critic, and journalist. After
being expelled from the Odessa gymnasium due to his illegitimate birth,
Chukovsky taught himself English and served as the London correspondent for an
Odessa newspaper from 1903 to 1905, which launched his career translating
