Wayne Darling, born January 3, 1945, in Perry, Iowa, is an American bassist and
composer known for his work in modern jazz. He began playing contrabass at age
13 and studied at Drake University, Ball State University, and North Texas State
University. Early in his career, he worked with Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Stan
Getz, and Dave Liebman. In 1974, Darling moved to Austria to study under Ludwig
Streicher. He performed with Ed Soph, Friedrich Gulda, Joe Henderson, and became
