Wallace Stevens
Wallace Stevens, born in Reading, Pennsylvania, on October 2, 1879, was an
American modernist poet and insurance executive. Educated at Harvard University
and New York Law School, Stevens joined the Hartford Accident and Indemnity
Company in 1916, relocating to Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked as an
insurance executive for the remainder of his life. He published his debut poetry
collection, Harmonium, in 1923, which featured famous poems such as “The Emperor
