The Toronto Symphony Orchestra is a Canadian ensemble from Toronto, Ontario,
founded in 1922 as the New Symphony Orchestra. They achieved professional
recognition for their first performance at Massey Hall in 1923 under the
direction of Luigi von Kunits. The ensemble adopted the name Toronto Symphony
Orchestra in 1927 and has performed at Roy Thomson Hall since 1982. Music
directors have included Sir Ernest MacMillan (1931–1956), Walter Susskind
(1956–1965), Seiji Ozawa (1965–1969), Karel Ančerl (1969–1973), and Sir Andrew
