Tom Kimmel, born Thomas Eugene Hobbs II in 1953 in Memphis, Tennessee, is an
American singer‑songwriter and poet whose early life unfolded in small towns of
south Alabama; he graduated from the University of Alabama in 1975. His initial
breakthrough came with the 1987 single "That’s Freedom" from the album 5 to 1,
which peaked at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1987 and was later
covered by John Farnham, reaching number 6 in Australia and earning Gold
