Stephen Stubbs, born in 1951 in Seattle, Washington, was an American lute
player. He studied harpsichord and composition at the University of Washington,
where he began playing the lute. After graduating, Stubbs debuted at London's
Wigmore Hall in 1976. From 1980 to 2006, he resided in northern Germany,
teaching at the Bremen Academy of Music. He is known for his work with ensembles
such as Fiori Musicali and Teatro Lirico, which he founded. In 1987, his
performance of Stefano Landi's opera La morte d'Orfeo led to international
