Sofia Rotaru, born on August 7, 1947, in Marchyntsi, Ukraine, was a Ukrainian
singer and songwriter. Her musical talents emerged early; she sang in her school
choir and church ensemble during her childhood. In 1968, after completing her
music studies at the Gavriil Muzicescu Institute of Arts in Chișinău, Rotaru won
first prize in the Folk Songs category at the IX World Festival of Youth and
Students in Sofia, Bulgaria. Rotaru's rise to fame began with her role as the
