Shel Silverstein
Sheldon Allan Silverstein, born on September 25, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, was
an American songwriter. He is best known as a cartoonist and illustrator, with
his work appearing in various publications including Playboy. His breakthrough
in music came when he wrote "A Boy Named Sue" for Johnny Cash in 1969, which
peaked at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Throughout his career,
Silverstein's songs were recorded by a wide range of artists, including Tompall
Glaser, The Irish Rovers, Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, and Marianne Faithfull.
