Sándor Kónya, born in 1923 in Sarkad, Hungary, was a Hungarian operatic tenor. He began his vocal training at the Franz-Liszt Academy in Budapest and later studied under Frederick Husler in Germany after World War II. His career took off with his debut role as Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana at the Bielefeld Opera in 1951. Kónya's breakthrough came in 1958 when Wieland Wagner cast him as Lohengrin at the Bayreuth Festival, a role he performed over 300 times worldwide.
