Ruth Olay, born Ruth Lissauer on July 1, 1924, in San Francisco, California, was
an American jazz singer. She began her musical journey influenced by her
mother's professional chorus singing and started taking vocal lessons at age 16
or 17 while working as a secretary at Twentieth Century Fox. Olay's breakthrough
came when she replaced Billie Holiday at the Avant Garde Club, leading to her
first LP Olay! The New Sound of Ruth Olay on Mercury Records in 1958 and
appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jack Paar. Subsequent albums included
Easy Living (1959) and In Person Recorded...
