Roy Eldridge
David Roy Eldridge (1911–1989), born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was an
American jazz trumpeter whose early start on piano at age five, followed by a
switch to trumpet, launched a career that made him a leading figure of the swing
era and a forerunner of bebop. He recorded his first solos with Teddy Hill in
1935, which proved popular almost immediately, and that same year he recorded
"What a Little Moonlight Can Do" and "Miss Brown to You" with Billie Holiday. He
appeared with Fletcher Henderson from 1935 to 1936, led his own octet in
