Roy Charles Hammond, born August 3, 1939 in Newington, Georgia, was an American
southern soul singer, songwriter and record executive who first emerged as the
tenor of The Genies in Long Beach, Long Island, where the group charted with
"Who's That Knockin'" in 1958. After a stint in the Air Force, he returned to
New York in 1965 and recorded "Shotgun Wedding" on his own Hammond label, later
leased to Black Hawk Records under the moniker Roy Charles Hammond, which peaked
at number 14 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart and reached number 6 in the UK in
