Red Smiley
Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley, born on May 17, 1925, in Asheville, North Carolina, was
an American bluegrass and country musician. He began his musical journey by
recording with Don Reno in 1952, forming the duo Reno & Smiley. Their
partnership lasted until 1964. In the late 1960s, he reunited with Reno and Bill
Harrell for further collaborations. Mandolinist David Grisman also played with
Smiley's band early in his career. In January 1972, while returning from a tour
of Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States, he died in Philadelphia
