Rebecca Sugar, born on July 9, 1987, in Silver Spring, Maryland, is an American
animator and screenwriter. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in animation in 2009. Sugar began her television
career as a storyboard artist on Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time. In 2013, she
created Steven Universe, becoming the first non-binary person to independently
create a series for Cartoon Network. The show earned her seven Primetime Emmy
