With their sparse, dreamy mix of woozy trap swagger and sun-kissed Gallic bliss, enigmatic duo PNL arrived on the French underground rap scene with a strikingly original sound in 2015, and despite not being signed to a label and rarely giving interviews, they quickly notched up millions of views on YouTube and soon topped the charts.

Growing up in the Les Tarterets housing estate in the suburbs of Corbeil-Essonnes, French-Algerian brothers Tarik and Nabil Andrieu both started rapping individually, but came together in 2014 as Ademo and N.O.S after the elder Ademo had served a prison sentence for drug dealing. Whereas many French rap acts in the past have been burning with fury as they've told of the immigrant experience on the fringes of society, the PNL sound was filled with airy synths, mechanical, auto-tuned, vocoder vocals and skeletal, down-tempo, hypnotic beats. Early track 'Plus Tony Que Sosa' and mixtape 'Que la Famille' failed to make much of an impact, but when 'Le Monde ou Rien' arrived in 2015, they suddenly had an underground anthem that chimed with the melancholy weariness felt by France's disenfranchised youth. A stylish video shot on the La Scampia housing estate in Naples, Italy went on to notch up over 100 million views on YouTube and their album 'Le Monde Chico' reached number two in the French charts.

More popular videos followed for hit tracks 'DA', 'J'suis QLF' and 'Naha' and album 'Dans la Legende', released on their own independent Que La Famille label, went on to top the French charts. Their music also became an unofficial soundtrack to the anti-austerity protests which began happening across France, but the duo remained entrenched in their own world even as singles 'A L'ammoniaque' and 'Au DD' reached number one in France. They returned with acclaimed third album 'Duex Freres' in 2019.
