Passenger, a Swedish alternative metal band from Göteborg, was formed in 1995 under the name Cliff by Patrik J. Sten and Niclas Engelin. Their music blended hard grooves with pop elements, influenced by groups like Handsome, Chum, Helmet, Depeche Mode, and the Posies. The duo initially recorded two unreleased songs at Studio Fredman before pausing due to other commitments.
