Nnenna Freelon, born Chinyere Nnenna Pierce on July 28, 1954 in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, is an American jazz singer. She began singing extensively in her
community and at local churches from a young age. In 1990, Freelon met Ellis
Marsalis at the Southern Arts Federation's jazz meeting, which marked a
significant turning point in her career. Two years later, she was signed to
Columbia Records and released her debut album Nnenna Freelon in 1992. After
