Nate Smith, born Ira Nathaniel Smith on December 14, 1974, in Chesapeake,
Virginia, is a renowned drummer, songwriter, producer, and three-time Grammy
nominee. Starting drums at age 11, he was initially influenced by rock and funk
before discovering jazz through Art Blakey's Album of the Year . Smith studied
media art and design at James Madison University, where he met Betty Carter,
leading to performances at New York City's Blue Note. He later joined Dave
Holland's quintet in 2003, appearing on Critical Mass (2005) and Pathways
