Material
Material was an American band formed in 1979 and operating until 1999, led by
producer and bassist Bill Laswell. The group began coalescing in 1978 at Giorgio
Gomelsky's Zu House in Manhattan, initially serving as a house band for visiting
European musicians, including Daevid Allen. Its debut release was the EP
Temporary Music (1979), followed by the studio albums Memory Serves (1981) and
One Down (1982). Throughout its career, the group collaborated with a revolving
list of artists, including singers Nona Hendryx, Bernard Fowler, and Whitney
