Markscheider Kunst, a world music band from Saint Petersburg, Russia, was formed
in 1992. The group's unique name is derived from German mining terminology, with
"Markscheider" referring to a surveying engineer in mining. Nearly all members
were former mining students. Their distinctive sound, influenced by their
ex-frontman Seraphim Makangila, blended Russian lyrics with Congolese music
styles like soukous and reggae. Their albums include St. Petersburg - Kinshasa
