Lydia Mendoza, born on May 31, 1916, in Houston, Texas, was a Mexican-American
guitarist and singer. She began a music career at age 12, recording with OKeh
Records. In 1934, she signed with Bluebird Records, a subsidiary of RCA Victor.
Throughout her six-decade career, Mendoza released numerous albums, including La
Gloria de Texas (1981). Her most well-known song was "Mal Hombre". She performed
at the Inauguration of President Jimmy Carter in 1977 and received several
awards, including a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for
