Lil Armstrong
Lillian Hardin Armstrong, born on February 3, 1898 in Memphis, Tennessee, was an
American jazz pianist, singer, arranger, bandleader, and composer. She received
early piano instruction from her third-grade teacher Violet White and later
studied at Fisk University. In 1917, she moved to Chicago where she worked as a
sheet music demonstrator before joining Lawrence Duhé's band. Her breakthrough
came when King Oliver hired her for his Creole Jazz Band in 1921. Armstrong
