La Sonora Matancera, a Cuban musical group, was founded on January 12, 1924 in
Barrio Ojo de Agua, Matanzas. Initially named Tuna Liberal, the ensemble
included Valentín Cané and Pablo "Bubú" Vázquez Gobín as co-founders. In 1928,
they made their first recordings for RCA-Victor and began performing on Radio
Progreso. By the 1930s, La Sonora Matancera had evolved into a conjunto, adding
a piano to its instrumentation. Notable members included Rogelio Martínez, who
