Born December 5, 1958 in Osaka, Kiyoshi Kitagawa (北川潔) was a Japanese‑American
jazz double bassist who began on bass guitar in a high‑school rock band before
switching to double bass at Kansei Gakuin Daigaku. In the 1980s he performed
with Sadayasu Fujii and Takashi Furuya, and in October 1988 he immigrated to the
United States and settled in New York City, where he worked with Kenny Barron
and Brian Blade. He released the albums Ancestry (2004), Prayer (2005),
Concentric Circles (2018), and Spring Night (2020) on Atelier Sawano, and
