Kerry Michael Chater (born August 7 1945 in Vancouver, British Columbia) was a Canadian songwriter and bassist whose career spanned pop, blues, and country. After joining the mid‑1960s band The Progressives, Chater moved to Nashville, where he became a prolific writer for artists such as Jennifer Warnes and Lee Greenwood. His breakthrough came in 1979 when "I Know a Heartache When I See One" reached number 19 on the U.S. pop chart and number 10 on the country chart for Warnes.
