At the age of 20, after playing trombone in his hometown's municipal orchestra, Juan Tizol left to try his luck in the United States. For almost 10 years, he played on the desks of several dance bands, and at the end of the 20s, he was hired by Duke Ellington, with whom he collaborated for almost 15 years.
