Joseph Pessach, known as Josef Marais, was born on November 17, 1905, in Sir
Lowry's Pass Village, South Africa. He studied violin and viola in Europe during
the 1920s before settling in London. His breakthrough came when he recorded
songs in Afrikaans for His Master's Voice, gaining attention from the BBC. In
1945, Marais began singing with Roosje Baruch de la Bardo, later known as
