John Stevens
John William Stevens, born on June 10, 1940, in Brentford, Middlesex, England,
was an English jazz drummer, composer, and a founding member of the Spontaneous
Music Ensemble. Initially interested in drawing and painting, Stevens studied at
the Ealing Art College and worked in a design studio before joining the Royal
Air Force at age 19. While studying drums at the Royal Air Force School of Music
in Uxbridge, Stevens met collaborators Trevor Watts and Paul Rutherford. In the
