Joe McPhee (born 3 November 1939 in Miami, Florida) is a jazz saxophonist,
trumpeter, flugelhorn, and valve trombone player. He began on trumpet at eight,
joined school and military bands, and first recorded in 1967 on Clifford
Thornton’s Freedom and Unity. After teaching jazz at Vassar College, he taught
himself tenor, alto and soprano sax at 32, inspired by John Coltrane, Albert
Ayler and Ornette Coleman. In 1975, the Swiss label Hathut Records was founded
to showcase his work, releasing The Willisau Concert (1976) and Tenor (1977).
