James Dugald "Jimmy" McPartland was born on March 15, 1907, in Chicago, Illinois, and was an American cornetist. He began playing violin at age five and later took up the cornet at fifteen. In the 1920s, he was a member of the Austin High School Gang, which helped define the Chicago jazz style through their improvisational energy. He moved to New York City in 1924, replacing Bix Beiderbecke in the Wolverines band.
