James F. Coleman is an American musician and keyboardist. He was a founding
member of the noise rock band Cop Shoot Cop, where he performed under the stage
names Cripple Jim and Filer. During his career with the ensemble, he utilized
found sounds and samplers to fill the musical range typically occupied by a
guitarist. His recording history with the group included the studio album
Release (1994), on which he transitioned to conventional piano playing. Coleman
has issued solo recordings under the moniker Phylr and released the ambient
