Jay Ferguson – born John Arden Ferguson in Burbank, California on May 10, 1947 –
is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known for stints with
rock bands Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne and his 1978 solo hit “Thunder Island.” He
began his musical journey by studying classical piano at the age of 12 before
learning the banjo four years later. He formed a bluegrass group with his
brother Tom, who played the fiddle. Influenced by rock music artists like the
