Helenita Vargas was a Colombian singer who was born as Sofía Helena Vargas
Marulanda in 1934 in Puerto Tejada. She was known by the nickname “La Ronca de
Oro”, a title given to her for her distinctive husky voice. Vargas specialized
in ranchera and bolero music and achieved an early career breakthrough at age 16
after performing the song “Farolito” with the Mexican composer Agustín Lara. She
signed with the label Sonolux in 1968 and released her first long-play album,
