Hazel Jane Dickens, born on June 1, 1925, in West Virginia, was an American
bluegrass singer and songwriter. Raised in a mining family, she moved to
Baltimore in the 1950s, where she began her musical journey. Through her brother
Robert, she met Mike Seeger, and the two became active in the
Baltimore-Washington bluegrass and folk scene in the 1960s, eventually
performing with Bob Baker’s bluegrass band. She also formed "Hazel & Alice" with
Alice Gerrard, releasing their first album, Who's That Knocking? And Other
