Hayes Alvis, born May 1, 1907, in Chicago, Illinois, was a jazz bassist and tuba
player. He started on drums but switched to tuba and bass after playing with
Jelly Roll Morton from 1927 to 1928. Alvis played with Earl Hines from 1928 to
1930, creating arrangements for Hines. In 1931, he moved to New York City and
joined Jimmie Noone in the Mills Blue Rhythm Band. From 1935 to 1938, Alvis
played with Duke Ellington. He collaborated with Benny Carter, Joe Sullivan, and
Louis Armstrong. During World War II, he served in an U.S. Army band led by Sy
