Harlan Howard

Harlan Perry Howard, born September 8, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, was an American country music songwriter. Influenced by the Grand Ole Opry, he began writing songs at 12. After serving in the U.S. Army, Howard moved to Los Angeles and achieved his breakthrough with "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down" recorded by Charlie Walker in late 1958. The following year, Ray Price's hit "Heartaches by the Number" (1959) further propelled his career. Howard then signed with Acuff-Rose Music in Nashville in 1960.
