One of the great names of the Italian Renaissance and a master of counterpoint,
Palestrina's output is impressive in terms of both quantity and influence. Born
in the town of the same name east of Rome, in the Papal States, between February
3, 1525 and February 2, 1526, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina lost his mother
in January 1536 and grew up in Rome, where he studied chant and music at the
