George Beverly Shea, born George Shea on February 1, 1909, in Winchester, Ontario, Canada, was a gospel singer and hymn composer. He began singing at religious meetings after learning to play violin from his father and piano/organ from his mother. In 1928, he studied singing under Herman Baker at Houghton College. Shea's breakthrough came when John Charles Thomas recommended him to study under Gino Monaco. He appeared on various radio programs, including Fred Allen's show on NBC and WHN.
