Emmanuel Jal
Emmanuel Jal, born Jal Jok on January 1, 1980 in Tonj, Warrap State, Sudan, is a
South Sudanese-Canadian rapper, actor, author, and political activist. Born into
a Nuer family and raised during the Second Sudanese Civil War, Jal joined the
Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) as a child soldier at age seven. After
escaping to Kenya with aid worker Emma McCune's help, he began singing to cope
with his experiences. Jal released his debut album Gua in 2004, featuring the
