Dorothy Adelle Kirsten, born July 6, 1910, in Montclair, New Jersey, was an
American operatic soprano. She studied at the Juilliard School and later trained
under Astolfo Pescia in Rome. Kirsten's professional debut came in 1937, with
her first opera role as Poussette in Manon in 1940. She joined the Metropolitan
Opera in December 1945, performing notable roles such as Mimì in La Bohème,
Violetta in La traviata, and Tosca in Tosca. Kirsten also appeared at the San
