The Contemporary Piano Ensemble was a US band formed in 1993 by jazz pianist
James Williams, featuring five jazz pianists: Harold Mabern, Donald Brown,
Mulgrew Miller, Geoff Keezer, and Williams himself. The group's debut album, The
Key Players, was released in 1993. Their unique interplay of four pianos in
their recordings allowed for a complex interplay that showcased their virtuosity
without overwhelming the listener. In 1996, they released Four Pianos for
Phineas.
