Coaltar of the Deepers were formed in Tokyo in May 1991. Their first release, the White EP (December 1991) on Strange Records, introduced the band’s shoegaze sound, which they later expanded into death metal, techno and other styles. In October 1992, they issued Queen’s Park all you change on Stomly Records, followed a month later by Sinking Slowly, both of which helped the group gain early recognition.
