Claude Thornhill
Claude Thornhill, born on August 10, 1908, in Terre Haute, Indiana, was an
American arranger, bandleader, and pianist. He studied music at the Cincinnati
Conservatory of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. He began his career
arranging for Hal Kemp's band from 1928 to 1931 and later worked with Ray
Noble's band. He formed his own orchestra by 1939, gaining prominence with
recordings like "Where or When" and "Sleepy Serenade". In 1946, he was
discharged from the Navy and reunited his ensemble with musicians like Lee
Konitz and Gil Evans. He disbanded his orchestra in 1948 due...
