Chuck Brown, born on August 22, 1936, in Gaston, North Carolina, is an American
composer, singer, and musician known for creating the go-go music genre. He grew
up in a poor Afro-American family in Washington D.C., where he began playing
piano and singing gospel at age seven. After a tumultuous adolescence marked by
petty crime and imprisonment, Brown returned to music in the 1960s, performing
in churches and joining various groups including Jerry Butler and the Earls of
