Breaks Co‑Op was formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 1997 by Zane Lowe and Hamish
Clark, with Andy Lovegrove later joining as vocalist and guitarist. The duo
first recorded the electronic album Roofers in 1997 under Deepgrooves
Entertainment, before relocating to the UK where Lowe became a radio DJ and
television presenter. In 2004 the pair regrouped, recruited Lovegrove after
hearing his demo, and released The Sound Inside in 2005 through EMI New Zealand;
the lead single "The Otherside" won Song of the Year at the New Zealand Music
