William Rahr Callahan, known as Bill Callahan professionally and born
3 June 1966 in Silver Spring, Maryland, is an American singer‑songwriter and
guitarist whose career began with lo‑fi cassette releases in the late 1980s. His
breakthrough came in 1990 with the cassette Sewn to the Sky, leading to a
contract with Drag City under the Smog moniker. Other releases under the Smog
name include, Sewn to the Sky (1990), Forgotten Foundation (1992), and Julius
