Arleen Auger, born Joyce Arleen Auger on September 13, 1939, in South Gate,
California, was an American soprano. She received a BA in Education at the
California State University and later studied voice under Ralph Errolle. Her
breakthrough came after winning several competitions and touring with the Los
Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Auger made her operatic debut as Gilda in
Verdi's Rigoletto and secured a long-term contract with the Vienna State Opera
